Aperture
A neo-grotesque in the San Francisco idiom, built on Inter by Rasmus Andersson and made ours: a text cut and a display cut, Helvetica-leaning alternates as the defaults, the languages this site speaks, eighteen styles in each cut. It is the only typeface this site and the app are set in — and a file in font.design you can open, edit and ship.

The way San Francisco does it: Aperture Display is spaced tight and cut for headlines; Aperture, the text face, opens up for body copy and the app’s chrome. Same letters, two jobs.

Lead · 24 px
A typeface has one job at large sizes and another at small ones. Aperture Display carries the headlines; Aperture, the text cut, carries everything you read — this line, the next dialog, the glyph grid.
Body · 16 px
The letters are Inter’s: vertical stress, open apertures, a tall x-height, terminals cut level. What is ours is the choice of defaults — the flat-top three, the G with a spur, the compact f and t — the two optical sizes, the character set, and the file itself, which lives in font.design with every glyph and every kerning class intact.

How it was made
Start from a great base. Make it yours.
That is the product’s own advice, so the house typeface follows it: Aperture begins as Inter — one of the best open neo-grotesques there is — and becomes ours through a build script anyone can read. It is published on the Community as a file you can open, remix and ship.

- Inter’s design space instanced at opsz 14 for text and opsz 32 for display, nine weights each, with italics.
- Helvetica-leaning defaults
- The flat-top three, the spurred G and the compact f and t are the plain glyphs, so every app shows them without feature support.
- The languages this site speaks
- Latin, Latin Extended, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, with punctuation, currency, arrows, maths and the common symbols.
- A font.design file
- Every glyph and every kerning class imported into the product, published on the Community, exported through the same pipeline as yours.

Start from Inter’s variable fonts, exactly as Google Fonts ships them, under the SIL Open Font License.

Instance the design space at two optical sizes and nine weights, upright and italic; set the alternates we wanted as the defaults; subset to the languages the site speaks; remove overlaps; rename, keeping Inter’s copyright and licence in every file.

Import the text styles into font.design as one family — every glyph, every kerning class — publish it on the Community, and set the site and the app in it.
